Surface activity of simple sulfobetaines

Key words:
surfactants, sulfobetaines, surface activity.

Summary
Surface active agents are very important group of organic compounds having wide
application in industry. Nowadays more and more popular are zwitterionic surfactants
especially sulfobetaines. For this compounds, characteristic is the fact that polar head of
sulfobetaines comprises two ionic centers, namely the quaternary nitrogen atom and sulfonium
group.
The possibilities of application of surfactants are largely dependent on their surface
activity. It seems that the most important surface properties are the ability to reduce surface
tension and wetting of solid surface.
The aim of the study was to determine the surface tension and wetting properties of simple
sulfobetaines. The results clearly indicate that these compounds exhibit ability to reduce
surface tension. In addition, contact angel measurements led to conclusion that the aqueous
solution obtained sulfobetaines have good wetting properties and may be classified as partially
wetting liquids.
