Application of solubility parameters in selection of solvents for efficient extraction of phenolic antioxidants from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grass

The aim of this work was to determine a practical usefulness of solubility parameter and its components to determine the composition of solvents for efficient extraction of phenolic antioxidants present in powdered barley grass. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined colorimetrically using the standard Folin–Ciocalteu method.  Numerical values of Hildebrandt solubility parameter, Hansen solubility parameter components and Bagley solubility parameter components for few solvents used for extraction we have computed by means of Hoy's method. The numerical values of the parameters obtained in such a way for several pure solvents and of two component mixtures were correlated with the antioxidant activity of the obtained extracts. We have found that among various tested solubility parameters of the solvents proposed as extrahents of phenolic antioxidants present in barley grass we can recommend application of the following indices: Hildebrandt solubility parameter δ, hydrogen bonding contribution δH to the Hansen solubility parameter and Bagley δA contribution to the solubility parameter.
