Oxidative and physicochemical stability of shower oils in storage tests

Summary
The effect of commercial tocopherol (Tocomix L50-IP), used at the concentrations of 0.04
and 0.2%, and 0.025% BHT, on the physicochemical and oxidative stability of shower oils
containing 40% of glycine soja oil was studied. Shower oils were stored at -5°C, 25°C and
40oC for 6 months. The physicochemical stability was monitored by the visual assessment and
density determination. The oxidative stability was monitored by the determination of peroxide
value. The protective effect of Tocomix L50-IP and BHT on oxidative stability of shower oils
was expressed as the Protection Factor (PF). It was observed that Tocomix L50-IP at higher
concentration 0.2% was better antioxidant than BHT and 0.04% Tocomix L50-IP in all storage
conditions. No physicochemical changes (except color) were observed in shower oils
containing 0.04% and 0.2% Tocomix L50-IP in relation to the control sample in any storage
conditions. Shower oils containing tocopherol remained clear, homogeneous oils, without
mechanical impurities for whole test. In shower oils containing 0.025% BHT the slight
sediment appeared on the bottom of the bottles after 60 days of storage only at temperature of
-5°C. The storage conditions found out to have influence the color of shower oils at 25°C and
40oC. The darkening of the color of shower oils was observed at 25°C and 40°C in samples
containing Tocomix L50-IP at both concentrations and 0.025% BHT. No major changes in density of all shower oils were observed. Altogether, the results obtained revealed that
Tocomix L50-IP can be used at the concentrations recommended by their producers as natural
antioxidant instead of synthetic BHT.
