Analysis of the content of antioxidant compounds in selected functional beverages

Key words:

functional beverages, phenolic compounds, antioxidant properties.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether functional beverages, which are consumed mainly in order to stimulate the body in the conditions of physical and mental effort, can also be a good source of antioxidant compounds. Three beverages of each type: isotonic, energy and health and wellness, were selected from the wide range of products available on the market. The presence of the total phenolic compounds was investigated and antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH method. Based on the tests, it has been found that some of the selected functional drinks are enriched with compounds which increase their health-promoting properties (antioxidants), but their presence in the products is negligible. It must be assumed that enriching the composition with polyphenols will allow for a better diet supplementation among people who regularly consume different types of
functional beverages.
